To accomplish the above, Louisville Metro Government has an Immigrant Human Services Task Force with the following Goal:

Goal

Human Service agencies, organizations and personnel who work with immigrants and refugees will be a resource to each other in a way that leads to action.

Process

The Louisville Metro Office for International Affairs and the Department for Human Services collaborate to provide staff support to a Task Force whose goal is to address human service issues within our growing international community. Chaired by Terry Singer, Ph.D., Dean of Kent School of Social Work, University of Louisville, this group includes immigrants and refugees as well as representatives of service providing agencies and organizations. The ultimate goal is to identify barriers faced by the refugees and immigrants and to promote public policy and practice that will improve their ability to become full and productive residents of Louisville.

MOSAIC AWARDS

The second annual MOSAIC Awards – A Salute to New Americans hosted by Jewish Family & Vocational Service (JFVS), recognizes new or first generation immigrants and refugees who are making a significant contribution in their professional field and in the community.

The MOSAIC Award is an artistic representation of Multicultural Opportunities for Success and Achievement In our Community. The dinner event will be held on Tuesday, May 15, 2007, with a cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m. and the dinner/program at 6:30 p.m. Location TBA.

MOSAIC Award Nominations Being Accepted Now Jewish Family & Vocational Service is seeking nominations now to honor new or first-generation immigrants and refugees who excel in the fields of medical/health care, education, technology, business/commerce, entrepreneurs, government, social service, sports and the arts. Honorees will receive the MOSAIC Award, an artistic representation of Multicultural Opportunities for Success and Achievement In our Community. Nominations can be made by individuals or organizations. The deadline for submitting a nomination is January 26, 2007. A review committee of community leaders will select the honorees, which will be approved by the JFVS Board of Directors. Nomination forms are available by calling Beverly Bromley or on the JFVS web site, www.jfvs.com.

Univeristy of Tennessee- Knoxville
The New Latino Immigration to Tennessee
This conference held at the University of Tennesse- Knoxville focuses on the opportunities and challenges posed by the arrival of newcomers from Latin America. Look at the "Continuing Education Opportunities" page for training topic ideas. This conference is unique in the fact that it provides specific courses for people depending on their profession.

Refugee Council
This London-based organization provides training courses to service providers, refugees, and refugee community organizations.

In addition to these programs Refugee Council also holds conferences on specific subjects.

National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights- BRIDGE (Building a Race and Immigration Dialogue in the Global Economy) Project
This fall, NNIRR's BRIDGE Project will train over 85 immigrant and refugee community organizers, educators and activists at the annual Immigrant and Refugee Rights Training Institute. The Training Institute gives emerging leaders in the immigrant and refugee rights movement the opportunity to develop their popular education skills; participate in "train the trainers" workshops based on the BRIDGE curriculum; to gain organizational capacity skills; and to network with immigrant and refugee rights organizers from around the country!

UNHCR- The UN Refugee Agency
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. It strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, with the option to return home voluntarily, integrate locally or to resettle in a third country.

Center for Applied Linguistics

Improving communication through better understanding of language and culture
CAL carries out a wide range of activities to accomplish its mission. The Center for Applied Linguistics

Promotes and improves the teaching and learning of languages
Identifies and solves problems related to language and culture
Serves as a resource for information about language and culture
Conducts research on issues related to language and culture

Women's Commission for Refugee Women and Children

The Women’s Commission for Refugee Women and Children works to improve the lives and defend the rights of refugee and internally displaced women, children and adolescents.

-We advocate for their inclusion and participation in programs of humanitarian assistance and protection. -We provide technical expertise and policy advice to donors and organizations that work with refugees and the displaced. -We make recommendations to policy makers based on rigorous research and information gathered on fact-finding missions. -We join with refugee women, children and adolescents to ensure that their voices are heard from the community level to the highest councils of governments and international organizations. -We do this in the conviction that their empowerment is the surest route to the greater well-being of all forcibly displaced people.

U.S. Committee for Refugees
To address the needs and rights of persons in forced or voluntary migration worldwide by advancing fair and humane public policy, facilitating and providing direct professional services, and promoting the full participation of migrants in community life.

Kentucky Refugee Ministries
Kentucky Refugee Ministries, Inc.
